SPOKANE, WASHINGTON – The Spokane Arena’s concourses were packed. As fans poured in for their first sight of the Seattle Kraken, product lines snaked through the throng, creating bottlenecks.
Even while playing 300 miles away from home, there seems to be little question about the NHL’s newest franchise’s appeal and reach.
“To be honest, it was amazing. I mean, I’m from the East Coast, so I’ve never visited this part of the country. It only goes to demonstrate how thrilling hockey is and how rapidly it is developing “Ryan Donato of Seattle said. “It’s really amazing to be a part of coming in here and seeing all the Kraken shirts and how quickly everything is developing.”
Seattle made its preseason debut on Sunday night, defeating the Vancouver Canucks 5-3 in the first game of the season for both clubs. The Kraken have spent their inaugural preseason on the road, visiting three junior hockey sites around the state while their own arena is being completed.
The Kraken came back from a 2-0 hole to win in front of 10,208 spectators, courtesy to three goals in the second period and two goals in the third period by Morgan Geekie.
Riley Sheahan, off an assist from Nathan Bastian, scored the first preseason goal in Kraken history at 2:32 of the second session. In the second period, Seattle’s Jacque McCann and Donato both scored on the power play.
It wasn’t quite the same as Vegas’ 2017 preseason opener, when it scored nine goals against Vancouver. The “home” supporters, on the other hand, were overjoyed.
Seattle coach Dave Hakstol remarked, “It’s wonderful to be back in a packed building.” “That’s something we’ve all been missing for a long time. It was fantastic to be able to do it here.”
There was need linked to Seattle’s choice to travel across the state for its first game. The Kraken’s home stadium, Climate Pledge Arena, is still a few weeks away from completion, and Seattle’s first home game will be against the Canucks on Oct. 23.
The choice to play in Spokane rather than keep all of the Kraken’s preseason games in the Puget Sound area was motivated by a particular outreach. The Kraken want to establish a brand for the whole Pacific Northwest, thus their regional broadcasts will include games from all across Washington, as well as Northern Idaho and Western Montana.
Playing in Spokane was a means to show appreciation for that part of the fan base, as well as to help build a relationship with the community.
“Tonight proves that our market is more than simply the Seattle DMA. There couldn’t be a better place to start than with the number of individuals wearing Kraken apparel and their genuine excitement “Tod Leiweke, CEO of Kraken, remarked just before puck drop. “This is just stunning. It’s a wonderful story. It’s stirring, and just going along that concourse makes me emotional.”
While the Kraken will play their last two preseason games at home in the Puget Sound region, Seattle may have chances to take its product on the road in the future. Alaska has been a major market for the Kraken, with the company encouraging contributions to assist the University of Alaska Anchorage men’s hockey team resurrect. Kraken games will be televised across Alaska, and the club scored a major coup by securing that region as part of their broadcasting rights.
“We believe that by raising half a million dollars via these three games, our partners and we will be able to develop connections. Supporting the campaign to preserve the Seahawks hockey program by traveling to Alaska is how you gain support “Leiweke said. “Winning is the easiest way to accomplish it, but there are other things that are as important to the goal.”
The emphasis on Spokane for the first night was to provide a shock to a usually quiet Sunday night in the Lilac City. Fans filled every table at Lord Stanley’s, a newly built hockey pub in downtown, several hours before the game. While there were a few people wearing Seahawks shirts and NFL games on the TVs, Kraken logos and apparel dominated — with the exception of two Red Wings supporters. Even on a Sunday afternoon jam-packed with NFL games, TVs were turned to the NHL preseason game between Boston and Washington.
“It’s just sort of surreal seeing folks for the first time,” McCann remarked. “We haven’t seen them in a long time for some of us. As a result, it’s fantastic.”
