Microsoft has finally changed the default behavior for Windows 11 to use SMB compression. This article will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of this new change, as well as how you can change it back if you want.

The windows 11 taskbar not working is a problem that has been present for a while. Microsoft has released a new default behavior for the SMB compression in Windows 11.

SMB compression is a new feature in Windows 11 and the corresponding Server product, as you may already know. It enables an administrator, user, or program to request that files be compressed as they travel over the network.

As an example: The Server Message Block (SMB) Technology is Microsoft’s network file sharing protocol. A dialect is a collection of message packets that define a specific version of the protocol. A dialect of SMB is the Common Internet File System (CIFS). SMB and CIFS are both supported by VMS. It’s worth noting that third-party versions of SMB and CIFS are also available for other operating systems such as Linux and Android. See the MSDN article below for further information. Microsoft’s implementation comes in three distinct flavors, each with its own set of extensions that may or may not function with third-party applications and operating systems.

The compression function eliminates the need to manually deflate a file, transfer it, and then inflate on the target PC. Compressed files use less network bandwidth and transmit faster, but at the expense of somewhat higher CPU use during the transmission. Windows 11 version 22449 was the first to have this functionality.

Microsoft chose to modify the default compression behavior based on the telemetry data. Previously, the SMB compression determination method would try to compress the first 524,288,000 bytes (500MiB) of a file during transmission and keep note of whether at least 104,857,600 bytes (100MiB) were compressed within that 500-MB range. SMB compression ceased attempting to compress the remainder of the file if it was less than 100 MiB. SMB compression tried to compress the remainder of the file if it was at least 100 MiB compressed. This meant that extremely big files containing compressible data, such as a multi-gigabyte virtual machine disk, would likely compress, but a relatively tiny file, even one that was highly compressible, would not.

If the compression function in the OS is activated, Windows 11 will compress all files by default. The user may control the behavior in the following way.

Using the decision algorithm, enable SMB compression.

  1. Start by going to the Registry Editor.
  2. Go to HKEY LOCAL MACHINE. SystemCurrentControlSetServicesLanManWorkstationparameters.
  3. Make a new REG DWORD entry. EnableCompressedTraffic
  4. Set the data value to 1.

Make SMB compress all files by default.

  1. Start by going to the Registry Editor.
  2. Go to HKEY LOCAL MACHINE. SystemCurrentControlSetServicesLanManWorkstationparameters.
  3. CompressibilitySamplingSize is the name of a new REG DWORD variable.
  4. Set the value to 4294967295 (in decimal).
  5. CompressibleThreshold is a new DWORD value.
  6. Leave it blank.

SMB compression should be disabled.

  1. Start by going to the Registry Editor.
  2. Go to HKEY LOCAL MACHINE. SystemCurrentControlSetServicesLanManWorkstationparameters.
  3. DisableCompression is a new 32-bit DWORD value.
  4. Set the data value to 1.
  5. Now go to HKEY LOCAL MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesLanManServerparameters and open it.
  6. Set the value of DisableCompression to 1 in a new 32-bit DWORD value.

That is all there is to it.
