Predictions for the Gold Cup match between the United States and Mexico
On Sunday, the United States and Mexico will compete for the Gold Cup championship, with the Americans aiming for a different outcome than when the two teams played in 2019.
Mexico won the match 1-0 thanks to a goal by Dos Santos in the 73rd minute. The US qualified for the final by defeating Qatar 1-0, with to a goal by Gyasi Zardes in the 86th minute.
Zardes, according to US boss Gregg Berhalter, is the ideal team player. “And he believes in the whole squad and just wants the group to succeed. I believe he walked in and immediately made an impression, and that is the kind of person he is. His output is consistently high. He’s constantly on the lookout for opportunities. He did it yesterday, and he did it again today.”
Prior to the match against Mexico, Berhalter worked the referees, criticizing them for their performance in Mexico’s 2-1 semifinal victory against Canda.
“We want it to be a physical game,” says the team. We want it to be a hard-fought game, similar to Mexico,” Berhalter said. “They’re both looking for the same thing. But we also want it to be fair, and that is the job of the referee in this game: to keep the game fair. I’ve seen Mexican players grab players’ necks and faces on many occasions, and such behavior has no place in the game. That is not acceptable in the game.
“We want our men to fight. We want both teams to go head-to-head. We want it to be a tactile experience. However, it isn’t allowed in the game. I didn’t believe the referee did a good job handling the semifinal [between Canada and Mexico] when I watched it. And they must get ahead of the game. Hands must not be placed on the neck or face.”
The US team is young, but they have won five games in a row in the event.
“When you name the roster, you never know how the squad will come together,” Berhalter added. “And I’ve been blown away by this group’s cohesion, how the players react to adversity, and how the squad is so focused on our objectives,” he added.
Mexico manager Gerardo “Tata” Martino is unconcerned with any of the players the United States may have left off the team. He just wants to win the Gold Cup two years in a row with his team.
“We’ll play against the United States and the players selected by their manager for this Gold Cup… The reasons for their selection are irrelevant to us; we are playing the United States in another final, and we want to win,” Martino said.
Mexico is a +125 favorite to win the match, while the United States is a +220 favorite.
